William's Story.
At 104 years old Bill Stone, one of the few surviving veterans of World War 1, underwent eye surgery funded by the MSF.
£3,720 funded the removal of cataracts in both eyes. Such was the improvement in his vision that he was able to attend the commemoration ceremony at the Cenotaph in London to mark the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of Word War 1 where he read the read the famous poem by John McCrae, In Flanders Fields. Bill remains the oldest applicant ever to receive funding from the MSF highlighting that the charity exists for people of all ages.
Sadly Bill passed away in January 2009 at the age of 108. The press coverage of his death confirmed him as a real character who will be sadly missed. He remains the oldest applicant to have received support from the Masonic Samaritan Fund. |
